LOCATION - Earlslaen House sits in the centre of the village but is completely hidden away and accessed by a private drive. Eardisland is one of the most sought after and beautiful villages in Herefordshire. It has a village shop, two public houses with restaurants and a tea room. It is ideally located for access to the market towns of Leominster, Ludlow and Hay on Wye with Hereford City just 15 miles away.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION - Earlslaen House was designed and constructed in the early 1970's by John Greene - an architect most renowned for reviving the art of green oak framing in the UK - and became the very first Border Oak home.
The house is atmospheric and intriguing - built from some of the most beautiful natural and reclaimed materials including Herefordshire stone, green oak and stone roof tiles. The attention to detail throughout is notable.
Perhaps the most distinctive architectural element is the vast 14th Century cruck barn which forms an entire wing of the property, with huge medieval curved oak beams creating high vaulted ceilings and adding a tangible sense of heritage, craftsmanship and interest. The original cruck framed barn was originally sited on a farm near Hay on Wye but was due to be demolished before John stepped in to save the important structure which he dismantled, relocated, restored and repaired in its current location as his family home. The barn now forms a truly impressive sitting room with a substantial stone inglenook fireplace, as well as an internal reception space, three large bedrooms, bathroom and a potential office space/further bedroom. A delightful and bright octagonal sunroom has been built to the side of the cruck barn with views over the very private garden lovingly created over the past 40 years and including many trees, orchard, established flower beds, pond and lawned areas.
On the other side of the medieval barn a large oak framed extension was added to provide a kitchen (with a DeVol kitchen and inglenook for a Rayburn/Aga/Everhot), oak framed dining room and private library with two further large bedrooms, bathroom and storage rooms above. The master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and the potential for a large dressing room.
Collectively the various parts of Earlslaen house form a very spacious, intriguing and beautiful family home with further potential and adaptablity.
Internally Earlslaen House is beautifully appointed and detailed with many craftsman made features including handmade oak doors and windows, authentic flagstone and oak floors and handmade oak staircases.
Earlslaen House is a truly unique and much loved property, which has never been sold before and is complemented by a wonderful garden which surrounds the house. In addition to the large and established garden, which includes a beautiful oak framed garden pavilion, there is a generous meadow area which could be used as further garden or indeed a paddock* if required.
There is a small oak framed garage/barn opposite the house which has potential for a number of uses, plus plenty of parking area and space for additional outbuildings subject to planning approval.
